The 91st Evacuation Hospital in World War II

Ten years after the death of my Aunt Margaret, I stumbled across a faded address book tucked amid her personal effects. Assuming it to be of little value, I gave the small notebook but a casual glance as I prepared to toss it in the trash. I was surprised to discover that it contained no addresses at all, but a series of entries that began with these words:

March 17, 1944 -- I arrived at the 91st Evac after 17 months with the 298th General Hospital at Bristol. The transfer to an Evac Hospital was what I had wanted so now I am happily on my way. Life has been uneventful but interesting in England but now there are new fields and bigger things ahead. Of course I regret to leave friends behind but the future rises so bright it drives all regrets [away] and now the future I hope to see with the 91st Evac.

The discovery of my aunt's war time diary started me on a five year journey to uncover the history of the unit in which she served. This web page offers but a snapshot of a much larger story which will ultimately lead to a book.

I am always eager to hear from persons who may have a connection with the 91st. If you or someone you know served with or was a patient in this hospital, I would very much like to hear from you. You can reach me by email.
